Thompson Child Development Center provide both Zeke and his v mom with the best start

‘Over the last three years, the teachers have been the light I need to help us through some dark days – they have not only supported Zeke in the classroom but they have been there for me too.’ ~ Zeke’s mom

Zeke’s mom wanted the best possible start in life for her young son. She was going through a divorce while still pregnant with Zeke and scared for how she would provide for her child as a single mom. Before Zeke was born, she looked for a suitable child care provider as she knew she would need to go back to work to support them both. She found Thompson Child Development Center welcoming and understanding of her situation. She was instantly put at ease by the support and understanding she received from staff even before Zeke was born.

Zeke started at Thompson Child Development Center when he was 8 weeks old and is now three years old. He is developing into a confident and happy young boy. The staff were all so welcoming they helped Zeke’s mom feel comfortable enough to share her situation and fears about being a single mom. In return they teachers have extended their support beyond Zeke to his mom as well. Having a secure and supported mom adds to Zeke’s well being and healthy development.

Circle of Parents® supports fathers being their best selves

‘Being part of this support group has brought my family closer together – I recommend it to all fathers!’ ~ Mr. Ortiz

Mr. Ortiz is very family-focused and works hard to provide for his family. Originally from Colombia, the Ortiz family moved to New York state three years ago and then a year later moved to the Charlotte area. The moves have been an adjustment for the entire family as they acclimate to the US culture and life without extended family and old friends. Mr. Ortiz focused initially on establishing a new job and career to ensure he can provide financially, not leaving time for much socializing.

Mr. Ortiz’s wife attended Thompson’s Circle of Parents® Support group for a while as he assumed it was a ‘mom’s group’. After attending a Family Valentine’s event and realizing there were other fathers who attended the group, he also joined to support his wife. He quickly realized the benefits of hearing from other fathers and learning new parenting skills. He also enjoyed the social aspect. Now, Mr. Ortiz and his wife attend regularly and actively participate and look forward to their ‘date night’ each week.

Owen overcomes his anxiety with support from our Foster Care program

‘I am thankful for the patience, encouragement, and support from my foster parents and foster care coordinator.’ ~ Owen

Owen is a 16 year old who loves animals and cars. He dreams of going to college to study auto-mechanics. Owen’s childhood was healthy and happy until his parents started to experience difficulties; their fighting and drug-use resulted in significant trauma for Owen and his siblings. Owen struggled with severe anxiety when he arrived in foster care and continued to experience grief of losing the life he used to have. He frequently disassociated, bit his fingers until they bled, and rarely interacted with anyone outside his foster family.

As Owen was in a Thompson foster home, he and his foster parents were able to access the full range of support, therapy, and mental health services to help him overcome his anxiety and deal with his traumatic past. Owen made significant, positives steps towards a happier future and learned to communicate openly about his experiences and emotions. He made a new group of friends, works part time, is successful in school, and is no longer experiencing disassociations or withdrawal. Owen will soon be adopted and is ecstatic about this new journey in his life.
